Steve Willems, also known as the Running Man is a living, local legend of Door County. He is the happiest most grateful and content man you are likely to meet. A bright and enthusiastic graduate of Gibraltar High School, he went on to college at UW Stout. On one trip home to Door County a tragic car accident left him in a comma for six weeks, and though his recovery was miraculous it left him with severe nerve damage. With his life altered forever he turned to running as a way to deal with the depression and pain. He has run his four miles everyday for over 40 years, showing no signs of stopping. Seeing Barney running and waiving at each car that passes by has turned into a part of Sister Bay's daily landscape. His resiliency and radiant happiness is inspiring to witness. He runs everyday and if there is open water, no matter what season, he is jumping in! And most days you pass him he will give you a wave, a smile, a hello and a "Beautiful day!"
Join us April 20th at 11:00 am to celebrate Barney and that everyday is a beautiful one! For the bravest souls, we will be jumping off the Sister Bay dock in true Barney fashion and then trotting up the hill to the Bowl for some celebratory drinks!
All proceeds will be donated to Ben Anderson, a beloved community member that is undergoing medical hardships.
