Steve Willems, also known as the Running Man is a living, local legend of Door County. He is the happiest most grateful and content man you are likely to meet. A bright and enthusiastic graduate of Gibraltar High School, he went on to college at UW Stout. On one trip home to Door County a tragic car accident left him in a comma for six weeks, and though his recovery was miraculous it left him with severe nerve damage. With his life altered forever he turned to running as a way to deal with the depression and pain. He has run his four miles everyday for over 40 years. Seeing Barney run and wave at each car that passed by had become a part of Sister Bay's daily landscape. His resiliency and radiant happiness were inspiring to witness. He ran every day, and if there was open water, no matter the season, he jumped in! Most days, when you passed him, he would give you a wave, a smile, a hello, and a "Beautiful day!"
Join us April 26th at 11:00 am to celebrate Barney and that everyday is a beautiful one! For the bravest souls, we will be jumping off the Sister Bay dock in true Barney fashion and then trotting up the hill to the Bowl for some celebratory drinks!
All proceeds will be donated to Lucia Ramirez, an eight year old Sevastopol student who is undergoing treatment for Leukemia.
